Braskem Inks Clean Energy Deals for WV and Penn. Facilities Through 2027

Braskem America signed contracts to receive renewable power and emissions-free energy for its production facilities in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well as to purchase RECs for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

The company completed a renewable PPA for its facility in Neal, W.V. and completed emissions-free power contracts for its facility in Marcus Hook, Penn. through 2027, in addition to its purchase of RECs. The largest producer of polyolefins, which also produced industrial-scale biopolymers, will see its annualized CO2e output reduced from the start of 2022 thanks to these agreements for wind, solar and nuclear energy.

The company is planning a more than 15% reduction in CO2e emissions by 2030 with a view to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Braskem has a clear commitment to helping create a Carbon-Neutral Circular Economy and everything is transformed,” CEO Mark Nikolich said in a statement. “Our initial North American renewable, as well as emissions-free power purchase agreements, are aligned with Braskem's macro goals of reducing CO2 scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and expanding the circular economy concept in the plastic chain with the end goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2050.  Looking ahead, we will further scale our North American renewable and emissions-free power purchases and we look forward to reporting on our progress along the way to creating a more sustainable future for everyone.”
