University of Michigan to Add 25 MW Solar Power by 2025

The University of Michigan plans to construct 25 megawatts of solar installations to harness a total of 32 million kWh of electricity.

The solar projects would be built at its Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses by 2025, according to the Michigan Daily.

The university will partner with the city of Ann Arbor for this project to enable it to lower its GHG emissions and reach its carbon neutrality goals.

The university’s goals include achieving net-zero carbon emissions from purchased power by 2025 and eliminating GHG emissions from on-campus sources by 2040.

University spokesperson Kim Broekhuizen said the plans include installing several on-site solar projects that will provide power to several buildings instead of constructing a solar electric grid, according to an email to The Michigan Daily.

The solar projects will be constructed on large rooftops and on elevated structures over parking decks and parking lots, she wrote.

The University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus used 660 million kWh of electricity in its 2022 fiscal year. The Dearborn campus used 23 million kWh and its Flint campus used 23 million kWh, according to Broekhuizen.
