Toyota on Path to 100% Renewable Energy in Michigan

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) announced its enrollment in a renewable energy program called MIGreenPower, which will help it achieve its goal to attribute 100% of its R&D operations in Michigan, including its headquarters and six other facilities, to renewable energy projects starting in 2026.

A part of DTE Energy (DTE), Michigan’s largest producer of and investor in renewable energy, MIGreenPower will enable TMNA to attribute an even greater percentage of its electricity use to Michigan-made wind and solar projects beyond the 15% DTE already provides.

Spanning a 20-year period, TMNA’s clean energy commitment will have the environmental benefit equal to preventing 29,000 metric tons of CO2 or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from more than 6,200 gasoline-powered passenger cars driven for a year.

In a statement, Kevin Butt, Director of Environmental Sustainability for TMNA, revealed how the company aims to achieve carbon neutrality: “Renewable energy programs like DTE’s MIGreenPower program are crucial to helping companies seeking a reduced carbon footprint to achieve their goals. From our R&D facilities in Michigan to our production and corporate facilities across the nation, Toyota aims to achieve carbon neutrality throughout our operations by 2035.”

On an annual basis, MIGreenPower customers have enrolled four million megawatt hours of clean energy, which has the environmental benefit equivalent of preventing more than three million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. By participating in the program, customers accelerate the development of new wind and solar projects in Michigan. By 2026, DTE will launch more than 2,000 MW of new clean energy projects to meet program demand.

DTE also developed its CleanVision Integrated Resource Plan to advance cleaner energy, which proposes increasing investment in solar and wind energy, fast-tracking the retirement of coal plants, and investing in the development of new energy storage.
