Michigan utility reportedly developing program for C&Is that want more renewable options

One of Michigan's two biggest utilities, Consumers Energy is reportedly working on a new program aimed at helping its largest customers obtain more of their electricity from renewable sources.

News site MiBiz reported April 3 that the investor-owned utility has been interviewing large energy users "to better understand what they're looking for in a renewable energy program" that will allow them to hit targets of up to 100% renewables. MiBiz quoted Nancy Popa, executive director of renewable energy for Consumers, as saying their business customers are driving the push for alternative energy even more than state policy mandates are.

The program may include purchasing renewable energy credits or some kind of "financial transaction around energy," Popa was quoted as saying.

The news follows a trend toward the "energy as a service" model as more and more corporations look to meet sustainability goals through renewable energy, and comes just days after one of the country's largest utility holding companies, Edison International, announced the launch of Edison Energy, an new business subsidiary that is serving as a advisory firm for large commercial and industrial customers. That business aims  "to identify and execute opportunities to help them lower costs in managing their entire energy portfolio," and deliver on sustainability objectives.
