KKR launches award program for eco initiatives

Part of a broader effort to identify, support and highlight successful corporate environmental projects, global investment firm KKR has launched an internal eco awards program for its massive portfolio of companies

The "Eco-Innovation Award" is part of KKR's "Green Solutions Platform," which focuses on environmental initiatives across three areas, which it identifies as eco-efficiency, eco-innovation and eco-solutions. KKR said in an Aug. 11 news release announcing the launch that the award will reward current projects or initiatives within KKR portfolio companies that are "innovative, environmentally beneficial solutions that create business value."

More specifically, according to KKR's website, the award program is intended to:

  • Help drive significant, measurable improvement in environmental impact (i.e., energy or water use);
  • Highlight measurable cost savings and/or added revenue that result from implementation of a project;
  • Encourage innovation, environmental awareness, and employee engagement at KKR portfolio companies.

Private equity portfolio companies communicating results to the broader Green Solutions Platform include Capsugel, CITIC Envirotech Ltd., First Data, Gardner Denver Nash, Gardner Denver Thomas, GoDaddy, Goodpack, HCA, Mitchell International, Panasonic Healthcare, Pets at Home, PortAventura, Qingdao Haier, Resource Environmental Solutions, Santanol, Sundrop Farms, Sungard Availability Services, Tarkett, Toys "R" Us and US Foods. Coriance, European Locomotive Leasing, South Staffordshire Plc, and X-ELIO of KKR's infrastructure portfolio; KKR's retail, multi-family, and hospitality real estate portfolios; and Ursa, a special situations portfolio company, are also communicating results.

"Our goal with the Green Solutions Platform and now the Eco-Innovation Award is to encourage and support our companies’ eco-innovation work as we do their eco-efficiency projects," KKR Director Elizabeth Seeger, who also leads the GSP program, said in a statement. "We hope that by launching the Eco-Innovation Award, we are not only recognizing the achievements of our portfolio companies, but also inspiring them to identify new and enhanced ways of creating sustainable value."
