Ford details GHG reduction strategy, goals

Government policies, physical risks, market trends and investor concern are among the host of external factors driving Ford Motor Co.'s global climate strategy.

In releasing its 18th annual sustainability report, Ford said it has already reduced CO2 emissions by 52% per vehicle produced since 2000.

"We know climate change is real and a critical threat, and we will continue to work with leaders around the world in support of ambitious global greenhouse gas reduction targets," Executive Chairman Bill Ford said in an Aug. 25 news release announcing the new report . "At the same time, we have the opportunity to make real environmental progress as we move into a world of smart vehicles and smart environments, including car sharing, multi-modal transportation and dynamic shuttles."

In the report, the automaker outlined its climate strategy in detail, and breaks it into three main area: 1. reducing vehicle emissions in its product lineup; 2. efficient, state-of-the-art manufacturing; and supporting its supplier base. On the manufacturing component, Ford's goal is to cut global emissions by 30% per vehicle produced by 2025 from a 2010 baseline. Additionally, Ford said it has exceeded its goal of reducing facility energy consumption on a per-vehicle basis by 25% compared to 2011.

Similar to a growing number of Fortune 500 companies, Ford's climate plans and targets are science-based.
