Molson Coors announces 2025 carbon goals

In announcing a new sustainability strategy with targets that run through 2025, Molson Coors Brewing Co. detailed its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase its use of cleaner energy sources. 

The global brewing company, which closed on the acquisition of MillerCoors in October 2016, said its new set of goals reflect its heightened global position post-merger. By 2025, the company aims to reduce absolute carbon emissions from direct operations by 50%, and achieve an absolute carbon emissions reduction of 20% across its value chain.

One example of its efforts include a recent investment in an anaerobic digestion project that reduces wastewater discharge and increases its use of renewable energy. The company operates anaerobic digestion facilities at 13 breweries, including four from MillerCoors, and recovers biogas for generating process heat in eight of them. The result, according to its sustainability report, is a savings of equivalent to 8,623 of tonnes CO2. 

"We've created a culture of doing more with less across our operations, so that's why we are focused on efficient energy use and integrating renewables whenever we can," the company said in its report. "After all, it not only reduces our impact on our environment and supports positive change, it also creates savings across our production chain." 

Additionally, in 2016, the company launched a project to analyze its enterprisewide carbon and energy footprint. It says the associated audit of its operations – including its supply chain – will help to refine and adjust its data scope as its works toward its 2025 goals.
