Amazon premieres rooftop solar system in Las Vegas

Amazon announced on May 29 the launch of a 1.1-megawatt solar rooftop installation on its North Las Vegas fulfillment center, consisting of 3,145 individual solar modules atop an 813,000 square-foot roof—an array the size of 3.5 football fields.

The project is Amazon’s second in Nevada and its 17^th U.S. rooftop solar installation launched over the past 14 months, on its way to a goal of 50 systems globally by 2020, according to a statement from the company.  "It’s exciting to see 17 of these solar rooftop systems go live in just over one year," said Tom Chandlee, senior manager of renewable energy at Amazon. "These projects are important steps toward our renewable energy goal and we hope they inspire our employees, customers, and communities as we work together to bring more renewable energy online in the coming months and years."

Amazon now has 28 wind and solar energy projects across the U.S. The company recently announced renewable energy projects include solar arrays on fulfillment center rooftops in California, Maryland, and New Jersey, as well as wind farms in Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas. The company statement noted that Amazon has announced or commenced construction on projects that will generate a total of 3.6 million megawatt hours of renewable energy. Amazon's long-term goal is to power its global operations with 100% renewable energy.
