Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam finalizes microgrid facility

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam celebrated Dec. 17 to opening of a new renewable energy microgrid that, once operational, will include the capacity for 1.5 MW of solar PV integration, 500 kWh of battery energy storage and the ability to restore 1 MW of power instantaneously with less than a 10% voltage drop.

The facility, named the Pacific Energy Assurance and Renewables Laboratory (PEARL), was developed in a partnership between the construction firm Burns & McDonnell and the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT), the Air Force Research Laboratory, National Guard Bureau, Hawaii Air National Guard and the Naval Facilities Command.

According to David Molinaro, acting HCATT director, the PEARL project is the first of six planned microgrids at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by August 2020 and will help reduce Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuels and increase grid resiliency during natural disasters. The state of Hawaii has a current goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045.

"The state of Hawaii is proud to pursue this innovative project," Ige said in a statement. "PEARL will advance the state's clean energy vision of maximizing Hawaii's energy self-sufficiency and security by developing and utilizing local energy resources in a balanced way."
