UPS seeks carbon negative June by matching carbon offsets

UPS announced June 1 that they will be matching the carbon offsets of participating shipments throughout the month of June in honor of World Environment Day on June 5.

When sending a package, shippers have the option to pay a small “carbon offset” fee, which UPS will then match in pursuit of a “carbon negative” June. Fees for the carbon offset option for customers are $0.05 for UPS ground services and $0.20 for UPS Next Day Air, UPS 2nd Day Air and UPS 3 Day Select services.

“There is truly no better way to honor World Environment Day than to facilitate actions that will help the planet,” Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, UPS chief sustainability officer (CSO) and vice president of environmental affairs, said in a statement. “UPS hopes to create more awareness about our carbon neutral shipping option so additional customers will take advantage of it, thus helping to fund large-scale carbon reduction programs and reduce the total carbon impact of shipping on the environment.”

UPS first started providing a carbon offsetting program in 2010 and offsets more than 100,000 metric tons of carbon each year as a result. Additionally, the shipping company supports projects like forestation, landfill gas destruction and wastewater treatment. Customers also have the option to choose sustainable last-mile delivery options and participate in UPS’s ECO Responsible Packaging Program.
