Renewable jet fuel production soars in the U.S.

The U.S. nearly quadrupled its production of renewable jet fuel from 1Q 2020 to 2Q 2020 and in 2020 is expected to produce 30% more bio-jet than in 2019 despite a decrease in 1Q, a new report found.

BloombergNEF found that the U.S. production of renewable jet fuel also increased by over 1 million gallons in the second quarter of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

According to the report, an increasing number of airlines and airports have been partnering with producers to secure their own supply of bio-jet fuel, like Delta Air Lines’ partnership with Gevo and San Francisco’s airport's partnership with Neste. AirBP and Cathay Pacific Airways also have agreements with Fulcrum Bioenergy to receive fuel starting in 2020.

The agreements have helped keep the production of bio-jet resilient during an economic slump faced by other types of biofuels, such as biodiesel, and the aviation industry as a whole as a result of Covid-19.
