Harvey Gulf to retrofit four LNG-fueled vessels with energy storage system

Harvey Gulf announced Oct. 19 that it will be retrofitting four LNG-fueled Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) with an advanced Energy Storage System (ESS).

The Louisiana-based maritime transportation company placed its order for the systems with Wärtsilä, a provider of LNG solutions and services. The company also previously fit a fifth vessel in this class with a Wärtsilä ESS and when the upgrade project is complete all five vessels will be capable of full tri-fuel operation. The boats will be able to operate on battery power when stationary in the field or in port to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

“The conversion to tri-fuel technology is a tremendous addition to our already successful HARVEY ENERGY class PSV’s,” Shane Guidry, Harvey Gulf President and CEO, said in a statement. “Wärtsilä’s advanced technology and its unwavering commitment to service support were extremely important factors in our decision to select them for this project.”

The retrofit project, which will include the installation of a Closed Bus-Tie 1360kW Drive with 746 kWh 1100 VDC Batteries on each of the four vessels, is expected to begin in 2021 and be completed in early 2022.
