Monroe County Water Authority to Install 5 MW of Solar on Public Lands

The Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA) began construction this week on a 5 MW solar array that will help New York State in its goal to generate 70% renewable electricity by 2030.

The public benefit corporation selected Sol Systems to install and operate the solar array through a competitive bid process led by the New York Power Authority (NYPA). Under the agreement, the solar array will provide all energy credits at a fixed price per kWh over 25 years to RG&E, which will then deliver credits to MCWA on its energy bills.

The system is expected to generate 8 million kWh per year and should offset more than 15% of MCWA’s water pumping and treatment electricity needs.

“By installing this renewable carbon dioxide-free power source with no upfront expense, our budgeted electrical costs will be reduced, which will continue to help keep our water rates affordable,” Nicholas Noce, executive director of Monroe County Water Authority, said in a statement. “Additionally, we will reduce our carbon footprint and foster sustainability through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.”

The system is being built on 29 acres of MCWA property in the Town of Penfield and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once operational, the solar array will be connected to RG&E’s power lines.
