Flex Avoided 71K Tons of CO2 in 2020 With Energy Management Programs

Flex recently released its 2021 Sustainability Report, which highlights its new commitment to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions 50% between 2019 and 2030.

The report found that the construction materials company saw a 95% growth in renewable energy use year over year by adding 73 MW of capacity. Flex avoided more than 71,000 tons of Scope 1 and 2 emissions through energy management programs, decreasing its overall emissions by 7% in 2020.

Additionally, the company offset more than 31,900 tons of Scope 3 emissions through carbon credits for projects in Brazil, China, Costa Rica, India and the Philippines.

Flex is now targeting a goal to require 50% of “Preferred Suppliers” to set their own emissions reduction target by 2025 and 100% by 2030. In 2020, the company succeeded in screening 100% of new global suppliers using social and environmental criteria.

To further support its sustainability goals, Flex has joined the UN Global Compact and the Science Based Targets initiative. In its new sustainability report, the company said it met 16 of its 20 goals within its previously established Flex 20 by 2020 strategy.

“Sustainability is at the core of what we do to not only responsibly build great products for our customers, but also do our part in contributing to a healthier future. 2020 was a year unlike any other, and I am incredibly proud of the dedication, resiliency and adaptability demonstrated by our global workforce to help us meet many of our Flex 20 by 2020 goals and support our communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” Kyra Whitten, vice president of marketing, communications and sustainability at Flex, said in a statement. “Continuing our purposeful journey, we are well positioned to scale proven best practices, apply invaluable lessons learned and drive more transparency to advance our long-term vision of sustainability and help our customers achieve their sustainability aspirations.”
