Suntory Updates Ambition for 100% Renewable Electricity
Suntory Holdings announced July 1 its intention to achieve 100% renewable electricity across its 63 directly-owned manufacturing sites and R&D facilities in Japan, the Americas and Europe by 2022.
The beverage company is targeting a 50% cut its direct emissions by 2030 and full net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. At the end of 2020, 30% of its electricity use came from renewable sources.
“As a company with a mission ‘to create harmony with people and nature,’ we are committed to doing everything possible to decarbonize our business,” CEO Tak Niinami said in a statement. “We will further accelerate our work by taking immediate actions in places where we can shift to 100 percent renewable electricity, which is a critical step in achieving our climate goals.”
Suntory plans to introduce internal carbon pricing to its group companies sometime this year and also to invest approximately 100 billion JPY ($900 million USD) by 2030 into low-carbon technologies. These projects should reduce the emissions from the company’s direct operations by approximately 1 million tons and allow Suntory to reach its net-zero ambitions.
Almost all electricity used in Suntory’s directly owned European facilities are from renewable sources, with 100% of the power used at the facilities for Suntory Beverage and Food Europe, its soft drinks business, coming from renewable energy. Five locations across Europe and Japan are already fully certified as carbon neutral facilities.
