DS Smith Reports 23% Emissions Drop Since 2015

DS Smith announced July 22 that it reduced carbon emissions by 23% per ton of production since 2015 and 4% since last year.

The producer of sustainable packaging material released its 2021 Sustainability Report and its progress made toward its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The company also reached its goal of ensuring all sites accounting for 90% of its energy consumption were ISO 50001 certified.

“As we continue to tackle the challenges facing our communities and the environment, achieving a number of our key targets, including forest management, community engagement and designing for a circular economy, shows great progress,” Keith Ledbetter, managing director of DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper, said in a statement. “By placing sustainability at the heart of all we do, we will continue to reduce our impact on the environment while creating innovative solutions that meet the needs of our customers.”

Other accomplishments highlighted in the report included the installation of 36,672 LED lamps at 96 sites globally, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 15,400 annually. Another project currently under review could add LED to an additional nine sites, which would increase the number of LED light installations to 40,000.
