bp to Source RNG Made With Poultry Litter For Vehicle Fuel

bp announced Aug. 24 a new agreement to purchase renewable natural gas processed from poultry litter to be sold as fuel to the U.S. transportation sector.

The RNG will be sold to bp by CleanBay, which manages the processing of the poultry litter, including a mixture of manure, feathers, and bedding, in an anaerobic digester. The biogas generated from the process is then processed into RNG that will be used as vehicle fuel.

Each CleanBay facility will be able to generate enough sustainable energy to power 9,200 cars per year by recycling more than 150,000 tons of poultry litter annually.

“Working with innovative companies like CleanBay will be key for bp to reach our net zero ambition,” Michael Thomas, vice president of biogas origination at bp, said in a statement. “As one of the largest suppliers of RNG to the US transportation sector, this agreement will help us continue delivering competitive, reliable energy solutions.”

bp will begin by selling the fuel generated through the partnerships to customers in California, where RNG fuel demand is high due to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard. It is estimated that RNG-fueled vehicles can result in up to 95% lower greenhouse gas emissions than those fueled by gasoline or diesel.

The agreement with bp will help finance CleanBay’s first active bio-conversion facility, which is planned for eastern Maryland. The company is also considering future sites in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and California to establish a portfolio of RNG that will offer farmers an alternative use for their poultry litter.
