Tesco Sets Interim Emissions Goals on Path to Net Zero

Tesco announced Sept. 24 its goal to reach net-zero emissions from its supply chain and products by 2050 and in its own operations by 2035.

The UK grocery retailer plans to target the emissions from its supply chain and products, which make up more than 90% of its total emissions footprint. Out of the company’s largest suppliers, 100 have already reduced manufacturing emissions by 20%. Tesco plans to reach out to all suppliers to ask for their commitment to reducing emissions further.

In the interim, Tesco is targeting a 100% reduction in its emissions from its own operations by 2035 in the UK. Within its global operations,

Tesco will now establish a plan for achieving its net-zero targets. Some strategies that the company will employ include supporting its suppliers establishing their own targets, accelerating decarbonization in its refrigeration, heating and transport and exploring ways to reduce emissions from agriculture and customer’s diets. Additionally, it will work as an advocate for industry action, seeking support from the British government.

“In this critical year for tackling climate change, it’s right that we set out this ambitious commitment to cut emissions across our entire value chain. We don’t yet have all the answers and we’ll need support from our suppliers and wider society to meet our targets, but it’s vital we take action now,” CEO Ken Murphy said in a statement. “Building on the good progress we’ve made in cutting emissions in our own operations, we’re also setting out a Group-wide net zero target of 2035. These new commitments will bring an unprecedented level of transparency to our emissions footprint and will allow us to identify and tackle those areas where urgent transformational change is needed.”
