Highgate to Transition Properties to 100% RE Use

Highgate announced Oct. 20 that it plans to transition its properties to 100% renewable electricity, beginning with a majority of select service properties and 17 full-service hotels.

The real estate investment and hotel management company will ensure the energy used in the hotels are certified by Green-e Energy and all participating properties have committed to receiving this verification by 2022. Highgate is a member of the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and is also a signatory of REBA’s Commercial Real Estate Principles supporting the decarbonization of commercial buildings.

Further, the company is pursuing a partnership with ENGIE Impact for help with implementing sustainability reporting, decarbonization efforts and carbon footprint reduction.

“We're determined to be part of the solution to address climate change. According to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, the hotel industry needs to reduce its carbon emissions per room by 90 percent by 2050 in order to keep the industry within UN goals for reduced emissions,” Marianne Balfe, Highgate's vice president of sustainability, said in a statement. “This is a humbling statistic that highlights the importance of investments in renewable energy as a business imperative moving forward.  The utilization of renewable energy is a simple and important step that the entire industry can and should be taking to reduce our collective impact. We are proud to be paving the way with aggressive and momentous sustainability efforts.”
