Seven California CCAs Sign for Energy Storage

Seven members of California Community Power, the Joint Power Agency of ten California Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs), voted on Jan. 19 to source 69 MW of long-duration energy storage.

The members will enter into an agreement with REV Renewables for its Tumbleweed project, a CAISO grid-connected, lithium-ion battery storage resource in Kern County, Calif. The system is expected to come online in 2026.

Members from CC Power issued a Request for Offers in October 2020, seeking cost-effective and viable long-duration storage. Since then, the California Public Utilities Commission issued an order requiring all CPUC-jurisdictional load-serving entities to procure from energy storage facilities capable of discharging for a minimum of eight hours. The project will satisfy approximately 55% of this long-duration storage compliance requirement.

The participating members in the storage deal are CleanPowerSF, Peninsula Clean Energy, Redwood Coast Energy Authority, San Jose Clean Energy, Silicon Valley Clean Energy, Sonoma Clean Power Authority and Valley Clean Energy. Each will go through their own review and approval processes with their locally elected boards.

“Long-duration energy storage is a vital resource, needed to amplify the value of renewable power, and accelerate California’s shift to a clean, reliable and affordable grid,” Girish Balachandran, California Community Power Board Chair and Silicon Valley Clean Energy CEO, said in a statement. “This first project is an exciting milestone that shows how CCAs work together to advance our shared goals in the transition to a carbon-free grid.”
