DHL Express to Equip Delivery Trucks with Rooftop Solar Panels

DHL Express plans to install solar panel units this year on trucks within its U.S. pickup and delivery fleet to support its emissions reduction and other climate goals.

The logistics company said it will install such solar panels on 67 of its medium- and heavy-duty trucks and expects to save 1,000 kg of CO2 emissions per year for each vehicle. The solar energy systems will be used to charge the battery, power lift gates and other ancillary equipment on the trucks, and will further reduce fuel consumption by reducing the load on the alternator.

“We're aiming to improve the lives of people where they live and work, using cleaner pickup and delivery solutions – such as electric vehicles and cargo cycles, and now augmenting our truck fleet with this innovative solar solution,” DHL Express U.S. CEO Greg Hewitt said in a statement. “This is another strategic step in our drive forward to decarbonization, and over time reducing all logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050.”

The TRAILAR system that will be deployed on the trucks also provides detailed information on the efficiency of the system through web-based reporting, including battery health, charging of ancillary equipment and overall fuel and CO2 saving.
