US Foods Unveils Sustainable Distribution Center

US Foods has opened its most environmentally sustainable distribution facility ever, featuring LEED certification, on-site solar, and a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas trucks.

The food distributor announced that its new 355,000-square-foot distribution facility in Sacramento, Calif., was constructed to support the company in reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Solar array installations are expected to be completed later this year and should cover between 40-50% of the building’s energy needs.

To improve the energy efficiency of the facility, US Foods built the facility with LED lighting, environmentally optimized HVAC systems, refrigeration systems that do not use water for evaporative cooling, and water-saving landscaping. The company expects to receive Silver LEED certification for the building’s design and construction.

US Foods will also be deploying a fleet of 27 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks at the Sacramento facility, which will be fueled by Renewable Natural Gas and will bring its total fleet of CNG trucks across the company’s operations to 75. The center includes an on-site fueling station to provide Renewable Diesel to the fleet, joining its operations in Vista, Corona, Livermore, and La Mirada, Calif., in their use of this low-carbon fuel.

“Our state-of-the-art facility in Sacramento enables US Foods to more efficiently serve independent restaurants and foodservice operators across Northern California due to its proximity to our growing customer base and the energy-efficient attributes of the building and fleet reflect our commitment to sustainability,” Dan Geissbuhler, US Foods area president, said in a statement. “Sacramento's dynamic economy continues to foster business growth and expansion opportunities, and we’re eager to showcase the many benefits the facility will bring to our customers as we help them Make It.”
