Successful Energy Transition Calls for Bold Actions, Says WETO Report

The global energy transition calls for accelerated action. That was the key message at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, during which IRENA’s Director-General, Francesco La Camera, introduced the World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023 Preview (WETO) with the goal to course-correct the transition’s trajectory and speed up meaningful progress toward climate goals.

For the energy transition to be successful, there must be bold, transformative actions that prioritize strategic areas and reflect the urgency of present conditions. Across the globe, investments and policies across all sectors must accelerate renewable growth and build the structural foundation to support a renewables-based energy transition.

To honor the 1.5°C commitment, it’s recommended that renewable energy deployment grow from today’s 3,000 gigawatts (GW) to over 10,000 GW in 2030, an average of 1,000 GW annually.

In a statement, La Camera emphasized that strategic innovation and stronger international collaboration are critical: “The stakes could not be higher. A profound and systemic transformation of the global energy system must occur in under 30 years, underscoring the need for a new approach to accelerate the energy transition. Pursuing fossil fuel and sectoral mitigation measures is necessary but insufficient to shift to an energy system fit for the dominance of renewables.

The emphasis must shift from supply to demand, toward overcoming the structural obstacles impeding progress. IRENA’s Preview outlines three priority pillars of the energy transition, the physical infrastructure, policy and regulatory enablers and well-skilled workforce, requiring significant investment and new ways of co-operation in which all actors can engage in the transition and play an optimal role.”

The full WETO report will be released later this year.
