Tronox Holdings, an integrated manufacturer of titanium dioxide pigment, announced the company lowered Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity by 21% in 2024 compared to a 2019 baseline.

The company accomplished its goal through a shift to more renewable energy across the globe, primarily through a solar project in South Africa, as well as benefits from process automation across the company’s operating sites.

In 2024, the company commissioned its 200-MW solar facility in South Africa, achieving 40% renewable electricity for its South African operations and increasing the share of renewables from purchased electricity globally to over 25%. A second project in South Africa is expected to contribute 200 MW of wind and solar power, which
is estimated to increase the South African operations to 70% renewable electricity. Additionally, Tronox’s Brazilian operations operate with 99% renewable wind energy.

Details were published in its 2024 sustainability report, which outlines significant progress in 2024 toward the company’s sustainability related targets.

The company also engaged with its top-emitting suppliers to collaborate on the reduction of their GHG emissions as part of Tronox’s Scope 3 emissions reduction strategy and decreased the amount of waste sent to external landfills by 13% in 2024 compared to the 2019 baseline. This was the result of producing less waste, recycling more material back into its processes, and exploring circular economy opportunities.

Tronox is also leveraging rare earths concentrates in the company’s tailings to provide metals that are crucial to the clean energy transition.

“At Tronox, our purpose is to responsibly transform the earth’s resources into products and opportunities that enhance lives. In part, this means demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the various facets of sustainability – protecting the environment, ensuring the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees and contractors, supporting the communities that host us, engaging with like-minded vendors and partners, and more,” said Tronox’s Chief Sustainability Officer and Head of Investor Relations and External Affairs Jennifer Guenther in a statement. “This report details the progress we continue to make towards our near- and long-term targets through the actions and  achievements of our Tronox team across the globe.”
