United Airlines named among 6 global industry leaders in biofuel use
United Airlines Inc. is among a list of six major airlines recognized as leaders in sustainable biofuel use by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
In the NRDC's third annual 2016 Aviation Biofuel Scorecard, which rates airlines on the sourcing and use of biofuels, it listed Air France/Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM), British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), South African Airways and United Airlines as leaders. United, which is headquartered in Chicago, Ill., was the only U.S.-based airline to make the list.
The group of leaders, the NRDC said, are characterized by "broad involvement in creating sustainable fuel supply chains, as well as solid commitments to use and purchase sustainable fuels and monitor and disclose performance."
The NRDC wrote in its report:
, and it is under unprecedented regulatory scrutiny in national and international climate policy arenas. Therefore, the industry is making substantial efforts to develop alternative liquid fuels to meet two goals: capping its carbon emissions by 2020, and reducing emissions 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2050.
For its study, the NRDC surveyed 29 airlines that have indicated a commitment to adopting aviation biofuels. The group received responses from 19 of those 29.
