Seeking 'climate neutrality,' Xerox cuts energy use

Xerox has reduced its energy consumption 12% since 2012, according to the global business services company's 2016 sustainability report.

The Norwalk, Conn.-based company's highly detailed report also shows a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in the same time. Also in the area of energy, Xerox said it has achieved a rating from the U.S. EPA's Energy Star program for 100% of its new eligible products in 2015.

"While our ultimate goal is to be climate-neutral, our first priority is to reduce our total greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the energy intensity of our operations," the company wrote.

Toward that climate neutrality goal, Xerox noted its use of renewable energy or renewable energy credits in the U.S. to offset portions of its electric load at its facilities in Webster, N.Y., Wilsonville, Ore., and Dallas.

Xerox is also finding success with the following approaches:

  • Shifts toward energy-efficient technologies such as emulsion aggregation toner, which is estimated to generate 28% fewer GHG emissions in the manufacturing process than conventional toner.
  • Process improvements including using digital multifunction systems in workplaces instead of standalone printers, copiers, fax machines and scanners.
  • Energy management and equipment upgrades such as utilizing outdoor pipes to cool process water in winter months (rather than powered industrial chillers) and replacing outdated heating and cooling systems with energy-efficient and digitally controlled models.
  • Efficiency-promoting initiatives including purchasing energy-efficient lighting and vehicles, reducing packaging sizes, mileage tracking and route efficiencies.
