Mars to power 5 more manufacturing plants with wind

Virginia-based Mars Inc. on Nov. 11 announced plans for a new wind energy project in Mexico that will provide 100%  of the electricity used by five of its manufacturing sites in the country.

The maker of confectionery and other products said in a news release that it will activate its new wind farm partnership with Vive Energia and Envision in 2017. Details on the wind facility were not provided, though its generation is expected to power Mars plants in Querétaro, Nuevo León, Jalisco and the State of Mexico.

"This is an important moment in global political and economic history, and we absolutely must come together to solve the immense challenges facing the planet," Mars Chief Sustainability and Health and Wellbeing Officer Barry Parkin said in the release. "Climate change, water scarcity and deforestation are serious threats to society. It is imperative that global businesses, like Mars, do their part to face down those threats."

The new facility marks the latest in a series of Mars wind energy projects, following the opening of its 200-MW Mesquite Creek Wind Farm in Lamesa, Texas, in 2015 and a 60-MW wind farm in Scotland announced earlier this year. The Texas project, according to the release, now generates the equivalent of 100% of the electricity needed to power the entirety of the Mars U.S. operations; the Scotland project is generating equal to what's required to power all of the company's U.K. operations.

The new project in Mexico is expected to drive a greenhouse gas reduction of more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
