Google: Achieving 100% renewable energy purchasing goal and going beyond
This white paper describes Google's path to achieving its 100% renewable energy purchasing goal, discusses the lessons learned from seven years and 2.6 GW of renewable contracts, and outlines how the company will continue its efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy.
In announcing that it will meet its goal in 2017, Google called that milestone "just the beginning." In addition to continuing to aggressively move forward with clean energy technologies like wind and solar, Google outlines in this white paper how it will work to achieve the much more challenging long-term goal of powering its operations on a region-specific, 24/7 basis with clean, zero-carbon energy.
The white paper also details the role of energy efficiency — Google says its engineers have spent years perfecting Google's data centers, making them 50% more energy efficient than the industry average — in reaching its goal.
