University of Maryland completes solar field

A solar field spanning 10 acres of land began operating at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Horn Point Laboratory Campus on Apr. 23.

Built with the goal of reducing GHG emissions, the installation is “expected to power an impressive portion of the campus’ annual energy consumption”, according to a report by WMDT. The project is the result of a PPA with Standard Solar, which installed 11,000 solar panels and will operate the field in exchange for use of the land. The University will purchase the equivalent energy being generated over the next 20 years from Standard Solar.

Jeff Miley, the facilities director at Horn Point Laboratory said, "It produces the equivalent of half our consumption. The electric actually goes right back into the grid, but it's the equivalent of more than half of what we consume here."

The Horn Point campus also features a solar carport featuring covered parking for about 50 vehicles and four EV charging stations.
