Amazon adds rooftop solar in Edison NJ
Amazon premiered its latest rooftop solar installation at its 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Edison, N.J. The new system features 12,654 panels that are expected to produce more than 4 megawatts of energy to provide 20% of energy needs for the building.
A report by ROI-NJ said that Amazon’s facility represented the 19th operational rooftop solar installation in the U.S. Amazon’s project is part of the company’s goal, announced last year, to host solar rooftop installations at 50 of its fulfillment facilities by 2020.
"Amazon has a long-term goal to power our global infrastructure using 100 percent renewable energy, and we are committed to this goal because we know it is good for our company, our customers, the planet and the communities in which we operate," said Kara Hartnett Hurst, Amazon’s head of worldwide sustainability.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who was present at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility, said, “The advanced transportation and logistics sectors are ones that have been pegged for growth in this state, and, with this center, we are off and running,” Murphy said. "This facility also has one foot squarely in the clean energy economy."
