Chicagoland Speedway to host new solar farm

A 30,000-panel solar farm is in the works to be hosted on property owned by the Chicagoland Speedway as part of a solar initiative the state of Illinois is implementing.

The Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals approved zoning exemptions last week, clearing the path for the construction of the solar farm, planned to contain 30,072 solar panels, at the speedway, according to a report by The Herald-News. The solar farm would generate electricity that would then be supplied to power companies throughout the state.

IBG Solar is partnering with the Chicagoland Speedway for the project. Matthew Nelson, a spokesperson for IGS Solar, told The Herald-News that the site "will be among many applying to participate in the incentive program to provide solar power to ComEd and other power companies that in turn could be bought at a discount by power consumers."

The system, if selected for the incentive program, would be made up of solar arrays at four sections of the speedway's property, including the Southwest Outfield parking lot, East Central parking lot, Northwest Pond and the Helipad lot.
