Daimler Trucks launches electric fleet test program

Daimler Trucks North America is integrating eight new trucks into its electric vehicle fleet in an effort to collect data on user experience and practicality of adding these models into its larger fleet of heavy-duty trucks.

The commercial trucking manufacturer coined the project the Freightliner Customer Experience Fleet, which includes all-electric pre-series trucks. The models being implemented are six heavy-duty Freightliner eCascadias and two medium-duty eM2 106 trucks.

At least 14 customers, who collectively represent more than 150,000 of all Class 6-8 trucks, will test the CX Fleet over the next 22 months, help Daimler identify potential obstacles to deploying commercial battery electric vehicles on a large scale and work to identify solutions.

“It’s critical that we collaborate with customers across multiple segments to further our understanding of how commercial battery electric trucks will be part of a long-term solution in CO₂-neutral transportation,” Richard Howard, senior vice president, On-highway sales and marketing for DTNA, said in a statement. “Our customers provide important, continuous feedback that contributes to our ongoing design and purposeful innovation of these trucks and together we will lead the future.”

The Freightliner Electric Innovation Fleet currently includes 30 vehicles and since 2018 has been providing feedback and data on integrating battery electric trucks into large-scale operations.
