CEMEX targets 35% emissions cut by 2030

CEMEX introduced its Climate Action strategy March 26, in which they outlined their goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and work toward a carbon-neutral economy.

By increasing the use of alternative energy, the building materials manufacturer was able to reduce their net CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious product by 22%, compared to a 1990 baseline.

They released their Integrated Report 2019: “Innovating for a Better World” this week, in which they established their long-term goal to deliver net-zero concrete by 2050. Additionally, in 2019 CEMEX achieved an alternative fuels rate of 28%, which was their highest in the past five years and sourced 30% of its power for cement from renewable energy.

“Our commitment to sustainability is one of the fundamental pillars of our business strategy because we know that it is essential to create lasting value. With the global move towards a 2030 Agenda, we recognize our responsibility to join the collective action to continue positively impacting the world,” CEO Fernando A. Gonzalez said in a statement. “To remain at the forefront of our industry’s evolution, we are empowering innovation to pursue our vision of building a better future for all of our stakeholders.”
