Gov. Cuomo pledges $11M for EV charging infrastructure
Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York announced Nov. 12 a fund of $11 million that will go toward building out the state’s network of fast electric vehicle charging stations.
The Direct Current Fast Charger program will be implemented by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, with the priorities being scaling up EV infrastructures in areas where access to fast charging is limited and improving the availability of charging infrastructure in disadvantaged communities. The program is being directly funded from the state’s $127.7 million allocation of funds from the Volkswagen settlement.
"New York continues to serve as a national model for reducing greenhouse emissions. As part of our efforts, we must ensure all New Yorkers, no matter where they live or their economic status, have access to the infrastructure required for using electric vehicles," Gov. Cuomo said in a statement. "This investment will build the infrastructure necessary for empowering more consumers to choose clean, electric transportation options while making electric vehicles an accessible option for all New Yorkers."
This program builds on the governor’s “Make Ready” program, which has implemented other initiatives to increase the amount of clean transportation in New York. Gov. Cuomo has been pursuing an increase in electric vehicle use in the state to support its goal of achieving an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The funding will be distributed to charging station developers through two initial awarding rounds, with the stipulation that at least four stations be installed at four or more site locations. Additionally, 25% of the public charging stations will be required to be located within half a mile of a disadvantaged community.
