Floating solar project to power municipal water treatment in Calif. town

The Town of Windsor in California will cover 90% of the energy needs of its water reclamation plant with power from a 1.78 MW floating solar project.

The floating solar project is the largest in the state of California and was purchased by C2 Energy Capital, with whom the Town of Windsor signed a 25-year PPA for the project. The use of solar power from the system will reduce the water reclamation facility’s electricity costs by 30% compared to grid services and the Town expects to save $5.4 million in electric costs over the next 25 years.

“The Town is proud and excited to have clean renewable energy power Windsor's water treatment plant,” Mayor Dominic Foppoli said in a statement. “It aligns with the Town's Climate Action Plan energy efficiency goals. This move helps to protect our environment, improve public health, and save the Town millions of dollars.”

The solar system is made of 4,959 solar panels that float atop the Town’s largest recycled water storage pond and was originally developed and built by Ciel & Terre, from whom C2 Energy bought the system.
