Tasteful Selections installs 5 MW microgrid at California facility

Tasteful Selections announced March 25 that it is installing a 5 MW solar, natural gas and battery microgrid system at its specialty potato plant in Arvin, Calif., to cut its power bill by up to 40%.

The agricultural facility is receiving the microgrid installation from Concentric Power and expects the $12 million project to increase efficiency at the plant through the simultaneous use of an accompanying advanced computer system to regulate power use. The solar panels were first installed between November and January, while the full installation is expected to be operational by fall.

The system will integrate demand for energy with on-site production, in order to improve the facility’s energy resilience and meet its real-time electricity needs, especially during power outages.

“We always knew we needed to add something [to ensure energy resiliency],” the company's chief operating officer, Nathan Bender, chief operating officer at Tasteful Selections, said in a statement

Concentric Power will be responsible for designing, building, maintaining and servicing the installation over its 25-year lifetime. The company expects to pay off the cost of the microgrid within four to five years.
