Pembina Pipeline PPA Allows Launch of Garden Plain Wind Project

Pembina Pipeline Corporation has signed an 18-year PPA with TransAlta Corporation for renewable electricity and environmental attributes from the proposed 130 MW Garden Plain Wind Power Project to be located in Alberta. Pembina will offtake 100 MW from the project.

"Pembina views power purchase agreements as an effective tool to support the development of renewable energy infrastructure, lower emissions, and support the transition to a lower-carbon energy system. With over 100 years of power generation experience, including extensive and growing renewable energy capacity, we are pleased to be working with TransAlta at Garden Plain and believe we have found the right partner to help Pembina accomplish its long-term goals," said Mick Dilger, Pembina's President and Chief Executive Officer in a statement.

Construction will start on the Garden Plain Project in the fall of 2021 with full operation in the second half of 2022. TransAlta will own, construct and operate the facility.

TransAlta will seek potential purchasers for the remaining 30 MW of power at Garden Plain from commercial and industrial electricity customers looking to reduce their carbon offsets. The company will offer any remaining energy to the Alberta merchant wholesale power market.
