Berry Global Plans Solar Investment to Cover Spanish Operations

Berry Global Group announced May 18 an investment into a solar project that will cover the electricity use of its Spanish operations.

The packaging products producer completed a long-term VPPA with Axpo Iberia for the construction of a solar park in Guadalajara that will reduce its carbon emissions by 20,000 tons per year. Berry’s sites in Tarragona, Madrid, Pamplona, La Caniza, and Barcelona will receive energy from the solar facility; the Tarragona plant represents 70% of Berry’s energy use in Spain.

“This agreement of the production of renewable energy is one of many steps Berry Global is taking to lower the carbon emissions of our operations,” Rodgers Greenawalt, executive vice president of operations at Berry, said in a statement. “By taking strides to lower our greenhouse gas emissions, we in turn reduce our customers’ Scope 3 emissions.”

Berry is pursuing a target of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2025 compared to 2019 levels. The company is investing in other projects as well to achieve these targets, including the installment of 50 MW of new capacity for the 626 MW Trillo project, the largest solar plant in Europe.
