Austrian Grocer Places Order for 70 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks

The Austrian grocer MPREIS will soon be receiving up to 70 hydrogen fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to support more than 300 of its European stores.

A definitive agreement was completed between MPREIS’s hydrogen initiative, JuVe Automotion, and Hyzon Motors, which will provide the vehicles. The first delivery of hydrogen vehicles is expected to take place in the last quarter of 2021 and the remaining will be delivered over the next three years.

“MPREIS prioritizes sustainable products on the shelves of our stores, so ensuring that those products are transported in an environmentally-friendly manner is not only a logical extension, but central to our corporate initiatives,” Julia Therese Mölk, member of the Board of Directors at MPREIS, said in a statement. “We are excited to take action on this initiative today by leveraging the technological advancements Hyzon provides.”

JuVe will supply the trucks to MPREIS and other buyers of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The first batch of trucks will include three different kinds of heavy-duty vehicles, such as tractor/puller and rigid chassis designs to support refrigeration units. The trucks will be assembled at Hyzon’s facility in the Netherlands.

To continue supporting the transition to a zero-emission economy, MPREIS has also installed EV charging stations across its locations and created JuVe alongside the creation of its own hydrogen production facility.

The companies involved in this project also plan to collaborate on a feasibility study to demonstrate the ability of fuel cell electric vehicles in alpine topographies.
