Fort Riley to Install 385 Solar Projects on Base Housing

The Fort Riley U.S. Army base will soon be implementing phase two of a solar energy installation initiative at military family homes across the community.

In collaboration with Corvias, Onyx Construction will be installing 385 solar systems, which will bring the total number of homes on the base with solar installations to 1,646. The two-phase project is expected to generate 16,000 MWh in the first year and offset around 40% of the housing community’s annual electricity use once completed.

The finished project is expected to be one of the largest solar installations in Kansas.

The Department of Defense is pursuing a target to directly provide 100% of the energy load of each U.S. military installation by FY2030.

In an effort to increase the energy resiliency of its military base housing, the DoD has previously worked with Corvias on the installation of 30.1 MW of solar generation, including 17,000 ground-mounted and 3,500 rooftop solar panels. These projects and others planned for the next two years should offset nearly 43% of energy use at three additional military housing projects, with a total capacity of 44 MW.

Corvias also recently completed a $16 million energy upgrade project at 32 newly renovated homes on the Fort Riley base.

“Corvias shares and supports the DoD goal of sustainability, including on-site resilient, renewable energy generation to help our partners achieve their energy security and resiliency goals as outlined by the Department of Defense,” Peter Sims, head of asset management at Corvias, said in a statement. “The Corvias solar program also supports our company’s core value of materially improving the communities in which we serve.”
