7-Eleven to expand emissions reduction program

7-Eleven announced today the expansion of its RENEW reduced emissions fuel program, the first phase of which saw results that include 24,000 metric tons of carbon emissions offset and 70,000 trees planted.

The second phase of the RENEW program will be expanding to 934 locations in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada, according to a press release. The convenience retailer chain partnered with GreenPrint, a company which promotes sustainability through retail gasoline, fleet and consumer product industries, for the project. At participating fuel and non-fuel 7-Eleven locations, GreenPrint calculates tailpipe emissions from gasoline sales to determine the amount to invest in certified carbon reduction projects in an effort to neutralize emissions in the atmosphere by up to 30%.

"For every gallon of gas purchased in the 7-Eleven RENEW program, an investment will be made in reforestation, green-scape projects, wildlife protection and renewable energy projects designed to help reduce car emissions," 7-Eleven stated in a press release. "Over the next year, more than 100,000 more trees will be planted across the United States in cooperation with the Arbor Day Foundation. In Canada, at least 10,000 trees will be planted with Tree Canada."

The RENEW program estimates that more than 1,250 acres of trees have already been planted  in counteraction to gasoline sold at the 7-Eleven locations, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture says would absorb 7,500 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
