New Jersey Gov. Murphy releases Energy Master Plan for 100% clean energy

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced Jan. 27 his comprehensive plan to get the state to 100% clean energy by 2050 by reducing energy consumption, increasing renewable energy, maximizing efficiency and expanding the clean energy innovation economy.

The Energy Master Plan seeks to reduce state greenhouse gas emissions by 80% below 2006 levels through the reduction of energy consumption and emissions from within the transportation and building sectors and by modernizing the state’s energy grid. Additionally, the plan outlines a strategy to develop offshore wind, community solar, a successor solar incentive program, solar thermal and energy storage while developing low-cost loans or financing for distributed energy resources to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy.

“New Jersey faces an imminent threat from climate change, from rising seas that threaten our coastline to high asthma rates in some of our most vulnerable communities due to fossil fuel pollution,” Governor Murphy said in a statement. “In the absence of climate change leadership in Washington, these reforms will help propel New Jersey to 100 percent clean energy by 2050. Through these aggressive actions, New Jersey will drive a world-leading innovation economy that invests in people and communities, ensures environmental justice for all residents, creates good-paying jobs, protects diverse vulnerable ecosystems, improves public health, and leads the way in the global clean-energy transition.”

Other key components of the plan include incentivizing local, clean power generation and expanding upon the 53,000 clean energy jobs already in the state.

Murphy’s Energy Master Plan was made possible through Executive Order No. 28, which the governor signed in May 2018 and directed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to develop a statewide clean energy plan in partnership with other state agencies. The announcement today includes the signing of a new executive order, No. 100, which directs the Department of Environmental Protection to regulate emissions and adapt to climate change through the Protecting Against Climate Threats program. The PACT program also calls for the establishment of a greenhouse gas monitoring and reporting program and the reformation of environmental land use regulation to incorporate climate change considerations into permitting decisions.
