Maine town plans 277 streetlight LED retrofit

The Town of Camden, Maine, approved an LED retrofit of 277 streetlights that is expected to reduce energy consumption by 66% and reduce streetlight operational costs by 76% within the first year.

The town is joining others in the area, including Rockland, Rockport, Thomaston, Waldoboro, Union and South Thomaston, in upgrading their streetlights. Camden expects the project to save an $842,279 over its twenty-year lifetime, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reported.

The LED lights will be installed by Hedstrom Electric beginning in June and the $161,000 installation will be managed by RealTerm Energy, an Annapolis, Md.-based logistics company.

After consideration of the customized lighting designs provided by RealTerm Energy, the town chose a lighting style that yielded the best balance of energy savings, cost efficiency and long term performance in addition to meeting the International Dark-sky Association’s guidelines for full cut off and 3000K or lower color temperature.
