Cubic Corporation cut carbon intensity by 17% in 2020

Cubic Corporations announced Jan. 27 that in 2020 it reduced its CO2 intensity by 17% and reduced its Scope 2 emissions, the focus of its emissions tracking, by 18%.

Going forward, the transportation and defense corporation intends to develop ways to track its Scope 1 and 3 emissions as well against a 2019 baseline. In its newly released 2020 Corporate Responsibility Report, Cubic reported its target to reduce its CO2 intensity by 45% from 2019 to 2025, of which it is on track to achieve with its 17% reduction between 2019 and 2020.

Due to consolidating processes and centralizing its manufacturing facilities, the company intends to reduce its overall environmental footprint by 20-30% by 2025. The company currently generated 906 kW of solar energy and offset 1,135 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

“This inaugural report highlights our commitment to sustainable, conscious business conduct and addresses ESG matters that are critical to our strategy and Cubic’s success as a technology-driven, market-leading company,” Bradley H. Feldmann, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cubic Corporation, said in a statement. “Each day, we are guided by our purpose – our TEAMS innovate to make a positive difference in people’s lives – which drives us to create innovative solutions that deliver sustainable value for our people, customers, communities and shareholders.”

In early 2021, Cubic plans to open a new Silver LEED-certified headquarters in San Diego, Calif. The new buildings will feature a solar farm that is estimated to reduce energy use by 10% at the location.

Other sustainability initiatives at its current office spaces include the installation of 50 electric vehicle charging stations for employees and 30% more efficient buildings thanks to the installation of energy-efficient lighting and variable refrigerant volume systems.
