Food Lion Commits to Climate Action

Southeast-based grocery franchise Food Lion announced on April 19  its 2025 and 2030 goals to reduce energy use, GHG emissions, and food waste while increasing transparency and sustainability in its food supply chain. This commitment builds on Food Lion’s numerous sustainable initiatives in partnership with its parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA (ADUSA).

“In 2015, we set big goals for ourselves to achieve significant sustainability targets in several critical areas, and I’m proud to say we’ve met or exceeded many of those milestones,” said Meg Ham, President of Food Lion, in a report. “However, we know much more work needs to be done, and that’s why we’re holding ourselves accountable for even bigger goals that we hope to achieve by 2025 and beyond. We are committed to sustainability across every part of our business – now and into the future – and we’re making it easier for our customers to join us to create a more sustainable community because we all have a role to play.”

Food Lion’s new targets include these 2030 goals:

  • 50% carbon emissions reduction from its own operations
  • 15% emissions reduction from suppliers, who will be assisted by Food Lion in achieving this target
  • 50% food waste reduction
  • 85% waste diversion via recycling, composting, and animal feed

Among the methods Food Lion is pursuing to reduce carbon emissions are utilizing renewable energy, improving in-store energy efficiency, using more climate-friendly refrigerants, and improving transportation and logistics efficiency.
