Albertsons Pledges to Lower Carbon Footprint

Albertsons Companies has committed to set an emissions reduction target that aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the U.N.’s Paris Climate Agreement.

“We are passionate about making a meaningful difference in our neighborhoods and planet and are committed to continuing to reduce our climate impacts,” said Vivek Sankaran, President and CEO, in a statement. “The SBTi framework will guide us in doing our part to minimize our impact within our own operations and beyond. We look forward to working with our supply chain partners to address this important issue.”

The retail company will first evaluate its electricity use, energy sources, refrigerants, and transportation to find areas for greater energy efficiency and use of renewables. This evaluation will also include examining the carbon footprint of its supply chain. With this information, Albertsons will then create an emissions reduction goal to be approved by the SBTi.

While working to define its SBTi targets, Albertsons is continuing its current energy initiatives. As a member of the Green Power Partnership program, the company sources over 70 of its locations with renewables. In addition, Albertsons began hundreds of energy efficiency programs in 2020. Collectively, these efficiency programs will reduce CO2 emissions by over 2 million metric tons annually - a good start to lowering Albertson’s carbon footprint.
