Whirlpool Commits to Net Zero Operations Emissions by 2030

Whirlpool Corporation’s goal of net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 has been approved by the SBTi. This commitment includes emissions from Whirlpool’s manufacturing and distribution centers across the globe, spanning over 30 sites.

The kitchen and laundry appliance company has also targeted a 20% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (compared to 2016 levels.) It has already reduced Scope 1,2, and 3 emissions by 60% since 2005.

"We are proud of the commitments we have made today, but we recognize our climate impacts extend beyond our plants and facilities," said Ron Volgewede, global sustainability director for Whirlpool Corporation, in a statement. "That's why we are committed to working with our stakeholders to continue to drive improvements across the entire value chain in an ambition to reach net zero across all our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in the long term."

To achieve its targets, Whirlpool will:

  • Install wind turbines and solar panels
  • Purchase clean energy through PPAs and fund solar and wind farms with VPPAs
  • Install LEDs and Energy Management Systems in all plants and facilities
  • Rely on 100% renewable energy by 2030

Whirlpool has already begun constructing its first VPPA-financed project. The Texas site broke ground in January of 2021 and will offset half of Whirlpool’s U.S. Scope 2 emissions. This will eliminate 15% of the company’s global operations emissions.

"Whirlpool Corporation has a longstanding commitment to sustainability and we established our first office for sustainability over 50 years ago," said Marc Bitzer, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation. "Our net zero commitment is an important milestone in our ongoing effort to improve life at home by protecting our planet and communities."
