Elisa's Near- and Long-Term Targets Approved By SBTi

Elisa, a 5G telecommunications and digital services company, has received approval for its 2030 near-term targets as well as its zero emissions target (including supply chain emissions) by 2040. from the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).

In 2018, Elisa became the first Finnish operator to set science-based climate targets. The company has already achieved the target of reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its own operations by 50% from 2016 levels by 2025.

“Through determined work, we have been able to reduce our emissions from fuel, electricity, and district heating and cooling by more than 77% compared to 2016. With our new science-based targets, we are substantially raising the level of our ambition. We are committed to achieving our near-term climate targets by 2030 without carbon offsetting. Over the longer term, we have set a zero emissions target for 2040, which means that, in practice, we will ensure that there are no carbon emissions in the supply chain, either," says Minna Kröger, Vice President, Corporate Responsibility at Elisa, in a statement.

Elisa’s new, SBTi-validated climate targets include reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from the base year 2021. The company aims to achieve these targets without offsets or beyond value chain mitigation.

Elisa Corporation is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2040 from the base year 2021. The company will prioritize decarbonization through direct emissions reductions, and all residual emissions will be neutralized in line with SBTi criteria before reaching net-zero emissions.
