UnitedHealth Group Conducts Scope 3 Review

UnitedHealth Group completed its first scope 3 assessment in 2022, which identified the most significant categories of emissions from purchased goods and services and investments.

The health insurance company commits to net-zero and reducing waste, water and paper usage and is seeking to scale solutions to reduce energy consumption in its real estate footprint, ranging from data centers and pharmaceutical distribution centers, to clinical care facilities.

UnitedHealth also started the installation of solar panels at its Optum headquarters in Minnesota, which is expected to meet 50% of the site’s energy needs.

Details were published in its 2022 Sustainability Report.

“UnitedHealth Group remains committed to building a more sustainable health system and planet,” said Patricia L. Lewis, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, UnitedHealth Group, in a statement. “This year’s report illustrates our continued commitment to help improve the lives of the people and communities we serve with an unwavering focus on addressing society’s most complex challenges. The progress we’ve made reflects the work of our employees to make society better.”
