UPS tests new electric vehicles for operational efficiency

UPS announced Wednesday that they have begun rounds of testing of new Gaussin electric vehicles that would be used to move semi-trailers and containers at their London Hub.

The electric vehicles are referred to as “shifters” and feature autonomous driving capabilities. Initial testing of these vehicles will be used to evaluate operational efficiency and autonomous driving operations will be incorporated later in the year.

“These tests are part of a major UPS effort to integrate electric vehicles throughout our global network,” Juan Perez, UPS chief information and engineering officer, said in a statement. “Gaussin’s shifters will help cut our fuel costs and reduce emissions. We’re also eager to test the shifters in autonomous driving mode. This is a great opportunity for us to evaluate technologies on our own property.”

The Gaussin electric vehicles feature zero emissions and battery swap technology that immediately replaces a discharged battery pack with a fully charged one. Gaussin and UPS have been collaborating since 2018 to create an efficient electric vehicle to improve operations at UPS facilities.
